چکیده

Chromosomes were studied in somatic cells of 60 plants of blue grama, Bouteloua gracilis (Willd. ex Kunth) Lag ex Griffiths, collectedfrom a 7-hectarefield ofnative range at the Central Plains Experiment Range (CPER), Nunn, Colorado, to determine chromosome constitution in relation to the plant characteristics. Somatic chromosomes were studied in root tips collected from vigorously growingplants in the greenhouse. Acetocarmine squash method was used to make slide preparation. The majority of the plants were 2n =40. However, threeplants were 2n =50 and two were 2n =60. The pentaploidplants (2n =50) were recorded for the first time in this report. Additional 94 plants collectedfrom entire CPER were a1l2n =40. The basic chromosome number of blue grama was determined to be x=lO. There was no significant relation between chromosome number and morphological traits: culm height and number, basal diameter, and plant dry weight.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the northern Chihuahuan desert: Temporal trends and potential consequences

Rates and impacts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are poorly understood in arid land ecosystems where soils are typically low in plant available N. To address this issue, we quantified long-term trends in N deposition and estimated its impact on plant community structure in the northern Chihuahuan desert of Central New Mexico, USA. Annual and seasonal rates of N deposition were strongly ...

Modeling small-scale spatial interaction of shortgrass prairie species

Native grasses interact spatially with themselves and their environment and can therefore be thought of as a system of dependent random variables. One method of modeling the spatial dependence of a multi-species population is a Gibbsian pairwise potential model. Since natural selection operates at the level of individual plants, the information obtained from such a model should provide a greate...

Using multivariate techniques to quantitatively estimate ecological stages in a mixed grass prairie

Cluster analysis followed by stepwise discriminant analysis was used to delineate ecological stages on a mixed grass prairie in western South Dakota. Forty-seven variables were analyzed for 48 sites ranging from potential vegetation to early seral stages. A cover-frequency index for western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii), blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), and buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) w...

Parallel shifts in plant and soil microbial communities in response to biosolids in a semi-arid grassland

Approximately 70,150 dry Mg of biosolids from over 450 wastewater treatment facilities are applied to the semi-arid rangelands of Colorado every year. Research on semi-arid grassland responses to biosolids has become vital to better understand ecosystem dynamics and develop effective biosolids management strategies. The objectives of this study were to determine the long-term (w12 years) effect...

Plant Interspaces Resulting From Contrasting Grazing Management in Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie: Implications for Ecosystem Function

We assessed plant interspaces in July 2007 using continuous line intercepts in twice-replicated pastures of northern mixed-grass prairie with contrasting grazing treatments: 1) long-term (25 yr) heavily grazed, dominated by the bunchgrass blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), and 2) ungrazed, dominated by the rhizomatous grass western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii). The number of plant interspaces ...
